CRPA member Terry White is well-known in the association for his commitment to keeping farmers connected. The way he does this best is through the annual Old Mates Day event run at his Wattle Hill farm.

This year’s event, run in late July, attracted over 100 farmers from around Tasmania to gather around the barbeque and have a chat.

Terry created the first Old Mates Day in 2017 after he noticed the closure of sale yards in southern Tasmania removed a vital opportunity for farmers to have regular social connection.

Quoted in the Tasmanian Country, Terry said isolation could have a significant impact on mental health – but sometimes all people needed was someone to talk to.

“You don’t want to leave it too late to say to yourself, ‘I wish I talked to him when I saw him last or I wish I called him up.

“So it’s good to see people come out for days like this.”

CRPA congratulates Terry on another successful Old Mates Day, and thanks him for his hard work in putting this important event on each year and reminding us of the ways we can all contribute to better rural mental health.
